…is the most developed city in Turkey. It is the third well developed metropolitan area in Europe. Istanbul is a megacity and it is multi-centered. It is the cultural, economic, and financial center of Turkey. Istanbul reaches both on the European and on the Asian sides of the Bosphorus.
In summer the weather is hot and humid. During winter it is cold, rainy and sometimes snowy. Spring and autumn are mild but the nights are chilly. Istanbul has a continual high humidity. You can especially feel it during the morning hours.
Dolmabahce Palace, the seat of government during the late Ottoman period, is located in Besiktas. The former village of Ortakoy is situated within Besiktas and provides its name to the Ortakoy Mosque. Istanbul’s primary economic centers are Levent, Maslak, and Mecidiyekoy. Besiktas and Sisli districts are popular with tallest buildings and Turkey’s biggest companies.
Istanbul is primarily known for its Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. Early Byzantine architecture followed a classical Roman model of domes and arches. Byzantine architecture and one of Istanbul’s most iconic structures, is the Hagia Sophia. Built as a church and then converted to a Mosque, Hagia Sophia is now being used as a museum. The Blue Mosque, Suleymaniye Mosque, and Yeni Mosque were built at the peak of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries. The other historical buildings are Dolmabahce Palace, Yıldız Palace, Topkapı Palace and Beylerbeyi Palace.
Center of Turkey’s economic life
Being the most developed city and former political capital of the country has always been the center of Turkey’s economic life because of its location. This city is also Turkey’s largest industrial center. Istanbul and its surrounding provinces produce cotton, fruit, olive oil, silk, and tobacco. Food processing, textile production, oil products, rubber, metal ware, leather, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, glass, machinery, automotive, transport vehicles, paper and paper products, and alcoholic drinks are among the city’s major industrial products.
Istanbul has more than 35 public and private universities. Most of the reputable universities are public. The best public universities are Ist. University, Ist. Technical University, Bogazici University, Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, Yildiz Technical University and Marmara University. The major private universities in the city include Koc University, Sabancı University, Ist. Bilgi University, Bahcesehir University, Yeditepe University, Ist. Kultur University and Kadir Has University.
