83 million people speak Turkish as their first language, making it one of the globe’s most commonly spoken Turkic and 15th most widely spoken first languages. Another 15 million people speak Turkish as a second language.

Knowledge of Turkish and the Turkish culture are advantageous to those who would like to study, work or live in Turkey. It is pretty much the same for all places where you do not speak the local language. If you learn the local language, it would be a lot easier for you to understand the culture, and communicate with the locals. It is key to getting to know a culture.

The Turkish language belongs to the Ural-Altaic group and has an affinity with the Fin – Hungarian languages. Turkish is written with the Latin alphabet and is the language of 90 percent of the population in Turkey. Turkish is an agglutinative language, meaning it involves the process of adding suffixes to a root-word.

Since modern standard Turkish is based on the dialect of Istanbul, it would be a good opportunity to learn Turkish in Turkey. There are several institutions which offer Turkish courses for non-native speakers.
