5th of December- remarkable day in Turkish history

Today is remarkable day in Turkish history. On 5th of December 1934  through legislation women gained full universal suffrage, earlier than most other countries. The reforms in the Turkish civil code, including those affecting women's suffrage, were "breakthroughs not only within the Islamic world but also in the western world"

Eighteen female deputies joined the Turkish Parliament with the 1935 general elections, at a time when women in a significant number of European countries had no voting rights. In 1993 Tansu Çiller became the first female Prime Minister of Turkey.
